Punishment record books, 1880-1921.

These books were used to track the administration and result of punishments given to inmates for offenses committed during their confinement and after judgments had been reached in the penitentiary's in-house court proceedings for prisoners. Although these records appear to duplicate much of the information found within the prisoner court record books, only those prisoners found guilty of their charges are entered in here. These typically include prisoner name and number; race and gender; offense; date; punishment' and remarks on effect of punishment; prisoner conduct or other related specifics. Around 1899, the home county of the prisoner and the prison term were also listed. The practice of indexing each volume alphabetically by prisoner surname was implemented during the same time period.
